You Are an Average of the 5 People You Spend the Most Time With

What’s the easiest way to ensure you’re becoming better every day? Spend time with people who strive to do the same.

While this ‘average of the 5 people’ thing isn't necessarily scientific, we do know from science that the people, ideas, and experiences around us shape who we are. While this all might happen subconsciously, the music, TV, podcasts, books, and conversations we intake on a daily basis all influence the way we perceive the world.

With that being said, look at who you spend your time with. Are these people pushing themselves to be better every day? Or do they lack ambition? Are they trying to live the same kind of life you see yourself living? Or are they going down a totally different path?

It’s so important to surround ourselves with people who lift us up, not drag us down.

I’ve spent plenty of time with ‘energy vampires’ as I call them—people who literally suck the good energy out of you. They do nothing but talk about their problems and everything wrong with the world. They complain about why society sucks and people are bad. Avoid these people at all costs.

If you want to be a good, moral person, spend time with people you see as good and moral. If you want to be a millionaire, hang out with people who are millionaires or are headed down that path. If you want to be healthy, hang out with people who take their health seriously.

I’m not telling you to go out and break off all your current relationships, but I’m reminding you to be more conscious of who you spend your precious time with.

Determine the kind of person you hope to be in 10 years and seek out either people with similar goals or better yet, people who are already there.
