My Top 5 Books

I want to thank Emilee Rohrer for giving me the idea to do this post!

I have been reading consistently every day for the last three years or so and as you might’ve already guessed, my favorite books lie somewhere in the self-improvement genre. I do, however, like to mix it up once in a while and read something else—usually along the lines of history or politics. Either way, I really only read non-fiction. So if you're into fiction, this post may not help you much. If you don't currently read, I highly recommend you start. Besides improving brain connectivity, reducing stress, and increasing your vocabulary, comprehension, and knowledge--reading is fun. It's good for your soul. So find a good book and get after it.

Below are my five favorite books from the last three years of reading. If you’d like to see my complete reading log, you can view and download it here.

What It's About: A memoir about David Goggins, a man who was abused by his father and bullied at school, grows up to become the toughest man on the planet. He was a Navy SEAL, Army Ranger, has run more than 60 ultra marathons, and set the world record for the most pull-ups in 24 hours with 4,030. Needless to say, he's a badass. His whole philosophy is based on doing things that suck in order to train your mind for the obstacles life puts in front of us.

Why I Liked It: I'm not even sure where to begin with this one. This book changed my life from the moment I picked it up. I related so much to his home life and his experience with his father as a child. His story is just incredible from start to finish and I can’t think of anything else more inspiring. Read this book and I guarantee you will have no more excuses as to why you can't do something.

What It's About: The history of humans through the scopes of sociology, science, politics, and anthropology. Starting with the first known humans through to the present.

Why I Liked It: This one was really hard to put down. The author does a fantastic job of putting very complicated things into layman's terms. My whole perspective of life changed after reading this... it’s so humbling to know that we are a mere blip in the time of the universe.

What It's About: Making tiny changes to your everyday habits can lead to significant results.

Why I Liked It: It seems like everyone is reading this one now, and for good reason. James Clear writes in a very simple and straightforward manner that makes it easy to read and understand. Even two years after reading this, I still consciously use so many of the ideas from this book. It definitely changed my everyday routine for the better.

What It's About: Using your subconscious mind to make things happen and manifest things into your life.

Why I Liked It: It's pretty incredible how powerful our minds are. We will act like the sort of person we conceive ourselves to be. I still use and actively think about a lot of the principles in this book to this day, especially the idea of the self-image and the theatre of the mind.

What It's About: The science behind waking up at 5am every day. Why starting your day before the sun with a strict routine can create some serious results in your life.

Why I Liked It: While I could’ve done without the sappy romance story entangled throughout, this book was great. I implemented the practices into my life for about 6 months and I was more productive than ever. Waking up at 5am is truly a thing of magic.
